Implementing organic agriculture
at Château de La Chaize
After obtaining HEV certification for the restructuration of the vineyards and the estate in general, Château de la Chaize’s principal mission became focused on converting the totality of its plots to certified organic agriculture (recognized in France by the “AB” label).
We began the restructuration by converting the plots located at the heart of the estate, in the Brouilly appellation. This first step meant following up on the development of the plots in a precise manner and assimilating the conversion process. It will then be extended to further-away plots, notably those in the Côte de Brouilly and Fleurie crus.
In order to optimize the implementation of organic agriculture, trials were carried out in the Brouilly plots as soon as the estate was purchased by the Gruy family in 2017.
Since the summer of 2019, all of the Brouilly plots have been managed organically. As far as the others are concerned, they will gradually be converted as vines are replanted. The aim is to have the entire estate certified organic as of 2024.
And so, the first Château de la Chaize vintage that is officially certified organic will be that of 2022 for our Brouilly cru. The 2020 and 2021 vintages are entitled to mention “in conversion to organic agriculture” on their labels.
